Palladino returns five on rain-affected day

Monday 25th April 2016
Written by Danny Painter

Tony Palladino returned 5-83 as Derbyshire bowled Glamorgan out for 377 before the hosts reached an early close on 98-2 on Day Two at The 3aaa County Ground.

Palladino’s 12th first-class five-wicket haul – his 10th for Derbyshire – was completed during a morning session in which the hosts reduced Glamorgan from 308-6 at the start of play, to 377 all out.

In reply, Derbyshire managed to score 98 for two from the 27 overs that they faced before a combination of bad light and rain brought about an early tea – which turned out to be the close of play – with Ben Slater unbeaten on 41 going into Day Three.

Graeme Welch’s men got the early breakthroughs they needed, taking three wickets during four overs to reduce their opponents to 314-9, after beginning the day on 308-6.

First, Luke Fletcher produced a beauty to castle Craig Meschede (3), clipping the bails via his off-stump, before Palladino enticed Graham Wagg (14) into an edge which flew to Chesney Hughes at first slip in the following over.

Palladino completed his five-wicket haul soon after when Michael Hogan attempted to hit him over the straight boundary, only to be well-caught by the back-pedalling Hamish Rutherford at mid-off.

Glamorgan were, however, able to secure a fourth batting bonus point thanks to a last-wicket stand between Andrew Salter (25 not out) and Timm van der Gugten (36) worth 63 that was eventually broken by Wes Durston (2-34) as the visitors were 377 all out.

Derbyshire’s reply was led by Slater, who lost both Hughes (19) and Rutherford (10) to the bowling of Michael Hogan, but batted brightly in overcast conditions during the afternoon session.

When the rain arrived at around 3.30pm, Slater was still there on 41, alongside Wayne Madsen who had played well for his 23 not out in Derbyshire’s 98-2.

The full covers were brought on and an early tea was signalled. The rain continued to pour after the tea break and the close of play was eventually announced at 5.30pm.

The hosts will begin Day Three on 98-2, 279 runs behind, at 11am tomorrow morning.
