Rain prevents Day Two progress

Monday 2nd May 2016
Written by Danny Painter

Shiv Thakor equalled his highest first-class score for Derbyshire but Bank Holiday showers prevented much progress being made on Day Two versus Northamptonshire.

Thakor reached 83 not out after a whirlwind stand of 48 for the last wicket with Andy Carter (17) as the visitors were bowled out for 324, securing three batting bonus points.

In reply, Northamptonshire reached 66-0 before the rain arrived just eight balls into the afternoon session and meant that there would be no further play on Day Two.

Having begun the day on 275-8 and with a third batting bonus point in sight, Derbyshire lost overnight batsman Luke Fletcher in the first over of the day for three when he was bowled by Azharullah.

The wicket could not, however, prevent Derbyshire getting up to and beyond 300 as Carter joined Thakor and set about creating a fruitful stand for the final wicket.

The pair were together for much of the morning session, with Thakor picking up from where he left off the night before, playing some lovely shots to defy the hosts’ attack.

Carter survived a blow to the head to reach 17 before he was caught by Graeme White to hand Azharullah his fourth wicket of the innings as Derbyshire were 324 all out.

Thakor was left stranded on a defiant 83 not out which equals his highest score for the Club, having hit 83 in the victory over Gloucestershire at Bristol in 2015.

The Northamptonshire openers made a steady start to their reply and, despite some tight bowling from the Derbyshire seamers, reached lunch on 65 without loss.

There was a five-minute delay to the afternoon session due to rain which then returned eight balls into the session.

The showers continued throughout the afternoon and the umpires decided at 4.50pm that there would be no further play on Day Two.

Northamptonshire will resume their second innings tomorrow morning on 66-0, trailing by 258 runs, with Ben Duckett unbeaten on 36 and Jake Libby 28 not out.
