Matt Critchley scored 86, whilst Harvey Hosein hit a half-century, as Derbyshire Second XI enjoyed a positive Day One of the Second XI Championship fixture with Nottinghamshire.

The visitors won the toss at Notts Sports Club and chose to bat first in bright sunny conditions. Despite the early losses of Ben Slater (13), Jonathan Tattersall (5) and Greg Cork (15), Derbyshire made sound progress throughout the day.

A number of middle-order batsmen made important contributions with Alex Hughes and Scott Elstone hitting 21 and 36 respectively.

Batting at six, Tom Milnes then added 42, before Critchley and Hosein took centre stage, the former playing positively for his 86 and the latter scoring 50.

Both batsmen were, however, dismissed before the close, with the pair becoming Ben Kitt’s third and fourth victims of the day. At stumps, Derbyshire Second XI were 305-8 with Tom Knight unbeaten on 11 and Tom Taylor three not out.
