Written by Danny Painter

Graeme Welch has named a 13-man squad for the Specsavers County Championship fixture versus Sussex at The 3aaa County Ground, starting on Sunday 8 May.

Derbyshire, who have started the campaign with three successive draws, will be aiming to claim their first victory of the season when they entertain Sussex, who have also drawn their first three fixtures.

The county enter this week’s match on the back of a drawn match versus Northamptonshire, in which Chesney Hughes continued his good start by hitting his second century of the campaign.

Captain Billy Godleman made his first appearance of the season at Northampton after recovering from injury and hit 94 in the second innings, as part of a 205-run opening stand with Hughes.

Shiv Thakor also enjoyed a good four days, first hitting his joint-highest score for the Club, 83 not out, in the first innings before claiming three wickets with the ball.

Sussex started the campaign as the bookies favourites for the Division Two title and an immediate return to the top flight.

Like Derbyshire, Sussex come into this week’s fixture on the back of three consecutive draws to start the campaign, having shared the spoils with Northamptonshire, Essex and Leicestershire.

Opener Chris Nash currently tops the side’s scoring charts with 359 runs from four innings at an average of 89.75, having struck two centuries. The Sussex middle-order is boosted by the hugely-experienced Kiwi Ross Taylor whilst former England man Ed Joyce continues to score heavily.

They will, however, be without Luke Wright who is injured and Chris Jordan who is currently representing Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

Sussex squad: Danny Briggs, Ben Brown, Harry Finch, George Garton, Lewis Hatchett, Ed Joyce, Matt Machan, Steve Magoffin, Chris Nash, Ollie Robinson, Ajmal Shahzad, Ross Taylor, Luke Wells, Stuart Whittingham.
