Derbyshire draw at Canterbury

Wednesday 29th June 2016
Written by Danny Painter

Derbyshire secured their second successive draw in the Specsavers County Championship after resilient Kent batting, in addition to Canterbury showers, meant the visitors’ victory charge was halted on the final day.

John Sadler’s men went into Day Four needing 10 wickets for victory, and were encouraged by an early dismissal, but careful batting from half-centurions Tom Latham, Joe Denly and Sam Northeast took the hosts beyond parity.

Having begun the day 163 runs behind, Kent manged to amass a 43-run lead with seven wickets remaining when rain brought about an early close of play at 4pm and the match was drawn.

The visitors got an early breakthrough on the morning of the final day when Ben Cotton found extra pace and bounce to entice Sean Dickson into a feathered edge to the ‘keeper on 22.

That would be the only wicket of the morning though, as Latham and Denly batted sensibly to take lunch on 134-1, having added 95 for the second wicket.

The partnership would, however, end on 103 when Wayne Madsen had Latham caught by substitute fielder Rob Hemmings at mid-wicket, having made 74.

Denly was joined by first-innings centurion Northeast and the pair put on 93 to take their side up to and beyond parity before the former was bowled by Neil Broom as the Kiwi batsman picked up his first wicket for Derbyshire.

A sprinkling of afternoon rain brought about an early tea at before 3.30pm when the Kent total was at 238-3 with Northeast unbeaten on 70.

By 4pm, the rain had increased sufficiently for the umpires to conclude there would be no more play. Derbyshire took home 12 points, whilst Kent took 10.
