Hamish Rutherford says it’s important that the Falcons back up their impressive start to the new Royal London One-Day Cup with another good display against Durham tomorrow.

The top-order batsman hit 104 off 79 balls in the Falcons’ seven-wicket win over Worcestershire Rapids on Sunday night, as Derbyshire successfully chased down 295 with 11 balls to spare.

The squad now return to The 3aaa County Ground for their first home Royal London One-Day cup fixture on Tuesday; 2pm start.

Speaking after Sunday’s victory, Rutherford said: “It was good to score some runs, contribute to a team performance and start the competition in the right way.

“We got off to slow start, which is obviously something we need to address going forward, but we paced it quite well.

“The wicket was a touch slow, so I guess 300 was alright as a target. There was a lot of cloud around earlier in the day, so we were unsure what to do with the toss.

“To get a couple of early poles on them was crucial. The sun came out and baked the wicket and people running up and down on it was going to make it tougher.

“I wasn’t noticing the pace [of the century] I was just playing the ball. We started quite slow so I needed to get in and get the innings some momentum going forward.”

He added: “We need to start again on Tuesday, it was a great performance last night but we need to win back-to-back games and putting in strong performances back-to-back.

“It’ll be great to get home again. It was a fantastic night Friday night; a good crowd and it’d be great to get some people in to watch some day-night cricket.”
