Tom Milnes hit 89 off just 112 deliveries as Derbyshire Second XI made sound progress on Day One of their Second XI Championship fixture versus Yorkshire.

Andrew Gale led a strong Yorkshire line-up in the fixture at Belper Meadows and, having won the toss, elected to field first. His decision appeared to be a good one when the hosts with 97-3 at lunch, despite Tom Wood hitting 39 and then trialist Josh Clarke impressing with 43.

After the interval, Charlie Macdonell (six) and Callum Brodrick (16) fell while the score remained on 113, before Greg Cork became Jordan Thompson’s fourth victim on an impressive day for the Yorkshire Academy bowler.

Milnes then took centre-stage, dominating a white-rose bowling attack including Ryan Sidebottom and Jack Brooks to hit 89 from 122 balls, including 12 boundaries.

Rob Hemmings added a late 23, but when Sam Connors was last man out – bowled by Thompson who picked up 5-60 – Derbyshire were all out for 279, with James Sookias left unbeaten on 15.

There were still 13 overs left in the day, which gave Cork chance to strike early in the Yorkshire reply. He had Eliot Callis caught in the slips by Hemmings before the visitors closed on 27-1.
