Wood and Hughes make centuries for Seconds

Tom Wood and Alex Hughes both scored centuries during a partnership worth 222 runs on a good first day of the Second XI Championship match versus Worcestershire for Derbyshire at Derby.

Wood completed Day One on 186 not out, having opened the batting after his skipper, Hughes, chose to bat first at the toss. Hughes, meanwhile, made 118 from 164 balls but fell shortly before the close, which Derbyshire reached in a commanding position on 418-3.

There were also runs for Scott Elstone, who has been in a rich vein of form for the Seconds in recent fixtures, as he made 47 before being second man out.

That was after Jonathan Tattersall had fell for 24 having opened with Wood, who came together with Hughes when the score was 143-2, and set about creating a dominant partnership that spanned the vast majority of the final two sessions of the day.

Having watched Wood reached a century at the other end, Hughes quickly got to one of his own but was unfortunately run out on 118 to end the stand of 222.

Trialist Charlie MacDonell joined Wood for the remaining few overs of the day, and the pair reached the close unscathed, at which time Derbyshire were 418-3 and Wood was unbeaten on 186.
