Second XI draw with MCCU

Thursday 4th August 2016
Written by Lewis Angell

Charlie Macdonell and Tom Wood hit half centuries on the final day as the Second XI Championship fixture versus MCC Universities at Weetwood ended in a draw.

Macdonell top scored with 74, while Wood was unbeaten on 66 as Derbyshire ended on 195-3 in their second innings, leading by 69 runs, as the match was drawn.

On the previous day, the hosts posted 301-9 declared to secure a 126-run first-innings lead. Trialist Gurman Randhawa (4-68) collected four wickets, while Dan Gibbs and Robert Peat claimed two apiece, but 128 from Neil Brand helped to put MCC Universities in the ascendancy.

A 112 partnership between opener, Matthew Norris and Brand proved a stubborn obstacle for Derbyshire after a good start, until Gibbs (2-61) intervened,  Norris caught at slip by Wes Durston for 65.

Charlie Lowen, Robert Sehmi and Alex Thomson all fell in quick succession without scoring, two to Randhawa and one to Peat (2-71), with the hosts slipping to 200-6.

Brand, however, continued to play well before being dismissed by Peat, when the declaration came with MCC Universities 301-9 declared.

Derbyshire started well in reply with Macdonell and George Sellers (11) sharing a 59-run opening stand, before the former then shared a 57-run partnership with Wood for the second wicket.

Macdonell was second man out for 74 off 119 balls, but Wood remained firm to end unbeaten on 66 and Derbyshire 195-3 at the close.
