Gary Wilson has signed a three-year deal at Derbyshire – we take a look at his career so far that has seen him travel the world whilst playing for Ireland and represent Surrey since 2005.

Born in Dundonald, Northern Ireland, in 1986, Wilson’s talents were spotted by Ireland at an early age, making his international bow for the country during the 2004 Under 19s World Cup at the age of 18.

In total, Wilson took part in 13 fixtures for Ireland at Under 19s level, scoring two half-centuries, before making the step up to make his senior debut in a three-day first-class fixture versus Scotland in 2005.

His one-day international (ODI) debut followed in 2007 when, at just 21, he was named in the side to take on India. Since that day, he has made a total of 66 ODI appearances and amassed over 1,500 runs, including a century against the Netherlands.

In addition to his significant ODI experience, Wilson has played 46 times for Ireland in Twenty20 internationals since making his debut in 2008 – the same year he made his first appearance for Surrey.

Wilson has excelled with the bat for Surrey in first-class cricket, scoring 2,931 runs during 60 red-ball fixtures for the county, including three centuries and 18 half-centuries, at an average of above 39.

Wilson has also claimed 117 catches in addition to three stumpings in first-class cricket for Surrey.

In domestic white-ball cricket, Wilson has featured in 56 List A matches for Surrey as well as 68 Twenty20 matches, hitting over 1,000 runs for the county in the shortest format of the game.

In 2014, Wilson also had a stint as Captain of Surrey after the premature departure of Graeme Smith and took control the side for five months.

As a hugely popular member of the Surrey playing staff, Wilson leaves the Kia Oval with the best wishes of everybody within Surrey County Cricket Club, including Director of Cricket, Alec Stewart, who described him as “one of the finest men in the game.”
