England Women are one win away from securing qualification for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, starting on 26 June in Derby, after securing a 3-2 one-day series win against the West Indies.

Both teams headed into the final match at Sabina Park with the series evenly poised at 2-2 and an all-round performance from England secured a five-wicket win.

Alex Hartley, the chief destroyer with the ball, took 4-24, while an unbeaten 57 from Natalie Sciver ensured the visitors left the Caribbean shores victorious.

“I’m really happy with how we have stood up and delivered a strong, winning performance in the final match of the series,” said England captain, Heather Knight.

“To come to the Caribbean and beat the ICC Women’s World T20 champions on their home patch, in tough conditions, and with a couple of set-backs along the way, shows how much character, desire and talent there is within this squad.”

Success in the Caribbean means that England are now placed second in the ICC Women’s Championship table, with one round of qualifying matches remaining. Knight’s team will face Sri Lanka in a three match series next month, and one win will secure their place in the global tournament.

Australia have guaranteed their qualification at the top of the table, with the West Indies and New Zealand placed third and fourth respectively.

Knight added: “We are learning and growing as a squad all the time, and we are already looking forward to the next challenge of taking on Sri Lanka in Colombo next month.

“We are well placed in the ICC Women’s Championship table, and hopefully we will put in some strong performances against out there to secure our place in the ICC Women’s World Cup next summer.”
