Ben Cotton says a big target of his is to be on the teamsheet for the county’s opening Specsavers County Championship game starting on Friday 14 April.
The 23-year-old, who was the Club’s leading wicket taker in the 2016 Royal London One-Day Cup competition, hopes his winter work with Player/Coach Tony Palladino will help his red ball game as he builds on his success from the white ball arena.
He said: “Everybody wants to play red ball cricket and we are all focused on that first game.
“I feel over the last few years I have been slightly better at the white ball format, but hopefully, working hard with Tony, I can become more consistent with my bowling and my red ball game will improve.
“I changed my bowling action last year a bit as the consistency wasn’t there, which is probably why I didn’t do as well as I would have liked. But hopefully with the winter training sessions my consistency will improve and I’m looking to take more wickets this summer.
“A big target of mine is to make the first game and be in the lineup for the first match of the season. Hopefully once I get that place I can secure it and do well in that position.
“This is the time we help each other out, but we are all fighting for minimal spaces really so its good because it keeps everyone on their toes and can only be good for the team.”
He added: “I want to play all three formats. I felt I had quite a leading role within the 50-over competition last season and I want to do that again. It’s a role I enjoy and I like bowling at the start and end of the games.
“I feel like I can now play a more senior role within the bowlers and hopefully I can add my experiences of playing in the one-day form and the four-day form to help the slightly younger guys coming through.”
