Tom Wood says the opportunity to represent Derbyshire is a dream come true and he is looking forward to the challenge of securing his spot in the First XI in 2017.
Wood, a Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby graduate, featured in three first-team fixtures in 2016 and made his first-class debut in September.
The 22-year-old averaged over a hundred for Derbyshire’s Second XI in 2016 and was named the Club’s Second XI Player of the Year.
Wood said: “I’m really enjoying it here. It’s a dream come true really to be able to come in and play cricket every day and represent Derbyshire.
“Training’s going well at the moment. It’s great to have Stubbo and Mal [Loye] on board with such vast experiences and knowledge of the game which can only help everyone in the squad.
“I’m going to be looking to learn from John Wright as well when he arrives. He has managed in the IPL and won it. He has got an abundance of experience and knowledge and I will definitely be looking to learn from him.
Wood added: “My aim is to try and break into the first team. I think that’s everyone’s hopes to try and nail down a place in the first team across all three formats and do well for Derbyshire.
“Everyone, including myself, wants to be in the starting team against Northamptonshire come April. Everyone’s working towards that as we work hard throughout the winter as we target that first game.
“I’m looking forward to getting more opportunities for myself and delivering good performances in a Derbyshire shirt. I hope I can nail down my spot in the top order as I feel I can play all three formats well and I am working on the required skills to play all three formats in the new season ahead.”
