England vs India in World Cup opener at Derby

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has today revealed that hosts England will face India at Derby in the opening fixture of this summer’s ICC Women’s World Cup.

The full match schedule for the tournament has been announced, with Derby hosting eight games, including two England matches, starting with the competition opener on Saturday 24 June. A number of the matches at Derby will be aired to a global TV audience.

India will feature in four games at Derby, including the much anticipated clash with their closest rivals Pakistan on Sunday 2 July. While the highly fancied New Zealand side will compete in three games, including a big fixture versus England on Wednesday 12 July.

Derby will also host the second Semi Final on Thursday 20 July, with the winner advancing to the final at Lord’s on Sunday 23 July.

Derbyshire CCC Chief Executive, Simon Storey said: “We’re delighted to be hosting the showcase opening fixture of this summer’s ICC Women’s World Cup and to attract a game of the calibre of England versus India.

“We have some exciting games to look forward to, with England appearing twice, India four times and a coveted Semi Final all in Derby this June and July.

“We have already had a big interest for tickets and because we have midweek games, fixtures are also proving popular with corporate guests, with hospitality packages on sale now.

“A huge amount of work went into our bid which focused on why Derby is ideally placed to take its spot on the global sporting stage. We’re very grateful for the support we have received from local cricket clubs and to the businesses who backed our bid.

“The unique support we received has helped us demonstrate that the city of Derby is a great place to live, work and will be a great destination for visitors from across the world.”

Derby City Council Leader, Councillor Ranjit Banwait added: “Derby City Council is delighted to have been able to assist in bringing the ICC Women’s World Cup to Derby.

“It is a great opportunity to show the world how we can work together to attract and deliver major events, and is another example of us delivering against our 50 Pledges. The benefits of hosting this international sporting competition will be felt throughout the city.”
