Derbyshire has signed New Zealand and IPL fast bowler Matt Henry as overseas player for the 2017 NatWest T20 Blast.

The 25-year-old, who will feature for Kings XI Punjab in this year’s Indian Premier League, will be available for the entire NatWest T20 Blast which will take place in July and August.

Henry, who has featured in six Twenty20 and 30 one-day internationals for the Black Caps, has appeared in 59 Twenty20 fixtures in total, claiming 52 wickets at an average of 29.

The paceman, who has previous experience in county cricket with Worcestershire in 2016, has also been a regular in New Zealand’s ODI side since making his debut in 2014, claiming 58 wickets at an average of 25 with best figures of 5-30.

Director of Cricket, Kim Barnett said: “I’ve been liaising with John Wright and Matt was one of his first picks. He came highly recommended as a fast bowler and also someone with a high strike-rate with the bat down the order.

“One of John’s key areas for this summer’s competition is to keep the runs down, and with the attack we’ve assembled, which also includes Hardus Viljoen and Imran Tahir, we’ve given ourselves the best chance of doing this.

“Matt has plenty of experience around the world, internationally and here in England with Worcestershire last season. He knows our conditions well and we look forward to him joining us.”

Henry added: “I really enjoyed my time in England last year and I’m excited to be returning to represent Derbyshire.

“The county has some exciting plans in the NatWest T20 Blast under John Wright. They’re determined to improve and advance to the knockout stages, and I hope I can play my part in a successful campaign.”
