Matt Critchley took 4-26, but Derbyshire Second XI lost by 111 runs to a strong Yorkshire side which included four internationals in a One-Day Trophy match at York.

Spin bowler Critchley starred with the ball, returning figures of 4-26 off his 10 overs. Tom Taylor picked up three wickets, while there were also wickets for Daniel Gibbs and Alfie Gleadall.

Charlie Macdonell hit 48 and Critchley 43 in the Derbyshire reply, but three wickets each for England bowler David Willey and Karl Carver left the visitors short as Yorkshire claimed victory.

After losing the toss and bowling first, Taylor (3-75) took the wicket of Adam Lyth in the third over, the opener caught by Tom Wood for four. England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow and Alex Lees added 63 for the second wicket, before Lees was caught by Macdonell off the bowling of Gibbs.

Gibbs had his second soon after, Bairstow caught for 60 off 37 balls, the England wicketkeeper-batsman striking 11 fours and two sixes.

Critchley then took the next four wickets in an excellent display of leg-spin bowling. Jack Leaning (18) and Liam Plunkett (11) were both bowled, before Matthew Waite (51) was caught behind by Harvey Hosein shortly after reaching his half-century.

Andrew Hodd was the last of Critchley’s four wickets, caught and bowled for eight, reducing Yorkshire to 196-7.

Taylor returned to the attack, picking up the wicket of Willey (54), caught by Wood after Critchley had palmed the ball back over the ropes preventing a six and enabling the catch.

There was also a wicket for Gleadall who bowled Yorkshire captain Azeem Rafiq for 42. Taylor wrapped the innings up, Matthew Fisher (2) caught by Wood as Yorkshire were dismissed for 295 inside 49 overs.

Opening the Derbyshire innings, Macdonell hit 48 off just 53 balls before he was caught by Willey off Plunkett.

Derbyshire slipped to 97-4 with both openers gone, along with Wood (1), caught by Hodd of Willey and Hosein (0), caught by Lyth off Willey.

Critchley’s 43 included six fours, but his wicket was one of four with the score on 111. First Callum Brodrick (11) was lbw to Rafiq, before Critchley and Cameron Ball (0) were lbw to Carver. Taylor (0) was was then caught by Hodd off Carver, reducing Derbyshire to 111-8.

Greg Cork (37) and Alfie Gleadall (23) showed resistance before Cork became Willey’s third wicket and Gleadall was caught by Lyth off Plunkett, Derbyshire falling 112 runs short of their target.

The Derbyshire Second XI are next in action in the One-Day Trophy on Thursday 4 May versus Worcestershire; 11am start.
