Derbyshire draw opening Second XI Championship fixture

Derbyshire fell three wickets short of claiming victory in a thrilling opening Second XI Championship draw against Lancashire at Hem Heath CC.

Ben Cotton took 3-41 and Tom Taylor and Rob Hemmings took two wickets apiece as Derbyshire took seven wickets on the final day, restricting Lancashire to 241-7 in their chase of 293.

Lancashire declared on 268-4 in their first innings and Derbyshire replied with 174-4d to set up a thrilling run-chase on the final day.

Tom Taylor made the early breakthrough, dismissing opener Karl Brown for 16, caught behind by Harvey Hosein. Calum Turner went soon after as Rob Hemmings removed him lbw for 27.

Danny Lamb top-scored for Lancashire with 89 whilst Josh Bohannon added 31. Seven wickets down, Toby Lester (18) and Matt McKiernan (16) stabilised the innings and saw the draw out, the visitors finishing on 241-7.

Derbyshire Second XI are next in action at Denby CC against Nottinghamshire in a One-Day Trophy game on Monday 24 April.
