Billy Godleman praised Ben Cotton after the Falcons’ first Royal London One-Day Cup fixture at Durham was abandoned due to rain with only 34 overs bowled.

Cotton, who made his first appearance of the summer, took the wicket of Durham’s South Africa opener Stephen Cook for 18 in the washed out fixture at Emirates Riverside.

Godleman said: “It was great to see Ben Cotton back out there with us fit and firing. He bowled with discipline and great threat all the way through, but we need to build pressure from both ends and we found it difficult to do that.”

Ben Slater also returned to the Derbyshire team for the trip to Durham. Godleman says that Slater will be disappointed that he didn’t have the opportunity to show what he had to offer in this game, but will get the opportunity soon.

Godleman added: “He’ll be disappointed that he’s travelled all this distance not to get a bat, but it’s great to have him back in the team and I’m sure it won’t be long before he gets a hit.

“Ben Slater played brilliantly for us in one day cricket last year so he has certainly cemented himself a place in our 50-over side.”

Will Davis, however, did not travel with the Derbyshire squad after sustaining a minor injury in the build up to this game. The captain hopes that Davis will be back as soon as possible once he has been fully checked up.

“Will Davis was preparing the day before the game, he bowled three overs but had a problem with his side,” he said.

“He’s going to have a scan and hopefully he will be back soon. He’s made a real good impression in the opening games of the season.”

The Falcons return to The 3aaa County Ground in their next Royal London One-Day Cup fixture to face Northants Steelbacks.

Godleman is relishing the opportunity for his side to return home and hopefully get their first win in this tournament.

He said: “We enjoy playing white ball cricket at Derby so it will be nice for us to get out there and play at The 3aaa County Ground.”
