Pre-Match Pack: Northants Steelbacks

Saturday 29th April 2017
Written by Danny Painter

Derbyshire Falcons have named a 13-man squad for the opening home Royal London One-Day Cup match versus Northants Steelbacks on Sunday 30 April at The 3aaa County Ground; 11am start.

Tom Taylor has been added to the squad that faced Durham on Thursday, where heavy rain prevented a result and Derbyshire claimed one point.

Will Davis and Rob Hemmings, however, miss out both through injury, while Hardus Viljoen is still unavailable but continues to work his way back up to full match fitness.

Ben Cotton, who made his first appearance of the summer at Chester-le-Street, will hope to continue his good start to the competition, while opening batman Ben Slater is set to make his first outing after rain prevented the Falcons’ an opportunity to chase at Durham.

This will be the 59th clash between the two sides in List A cricket. The current playing record shows 27 wins for Derbyshire, with 17 defeats, one tied game, and a high-proportion of 13 matches declared either no result or abandoned.

Opposition

Reigning NatWest T20 Blast champions Northants Steelbacks slipped to a ten-wicket defeat against Warwickshire in their opening Royal London One-Day Cup match.

After fielding a strong XI, Northants were bowled out for 151, Rob Keogh top-scoring with 69 not out. But the hosts failed to take a Warwickshire wicket as Will Porterfield and Sam Hain chased down the revised total.

Back from an injury which kept him out of the first two games of the season, Azharullah is set to lead the bowling attack alongside Nathan Buck, with Graeme White the main spin threat.

England international batsman, Ben Duckett, is cleared to play by the ECB and is likely to open the innings, with Keogh and Adam Rossington bolstering the middle order.

Pre-Match Talk

Captain Billy Godleman says Derbyshire will use their strengths to the best of their ability as they prepare for the opening home fixture in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

“We enjoy playing white ball cricket at Derby,” said Godleman. “We’ll welcome Northants back, who we had a close and tough game with in the first game of the Specsavers County Championship, so it will be nice to get back out and play at The 3aaa County Ground.

“They’re highly skilled at hitting boundaries and bowling in the right areas in different phases in the white ball game,” Godleman added.

“We know what we’re up against but we are also clear and what our strengths are and our plan is to use them to the best of our ability.”

Despite the wash-out result at Durham, Godleman was pleased with the bowling of Ben Cotton and also the return of Ben Slater to the List A side.

“It was great to see Ben Cotton back out there with us, fit and firing and bowling with discipline,” said Godleman.

“[Ben] Slater played brilliantly for us in One-Day cricket last year and certainly cemented his place in our 50 over side. He scored three one-day hundreds for us last year and it’s great to have him back in the team.”
