Derbyshire face Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in the Specsavers County Championship, starting on Friday 2 June, in the 203rd scheduled first-class fixture since the counties first met at the same ground in May 1875.

Heritage Officer, David Griffin, looks at the statistical background to the game.

This will be Derbyshire’s first encounter with their near-neighbours in the Specsavers County Championship since the two sides met at Nottingham in a drawn game in the First Division in June 2013.

Derbyshire’s highest innings score in these games is 572-7 declared at Derby in 1991, and 572 all out in 2001, while five Derbyshire players have recorded double hundreds against Nottinghamshire: Pat Vaulkhard, Arnold Hamer, Kim Barnett, Charlie Elliot and Denis Smith.

There have been 11 double-hundreds scored in these matches for Nottinghamshire – William Gunn making three of them.

TS ‘Stan’ Worthington is the only Derbyshire batsman to make a hundred in each innings in these fixtures; 103 and 110 not out in 1938 at Ilkeston, while Bill Storer is the only wicketkeeper to have scored a century against Nottinghamshire, 109 at Trent Bridge in 1898, a game in which he also bowled.

The best bowling figures for Derbyshire were recorded by Arnold Warren at Worksop in 1904 when he achieved match figures of 15-112, the 4th best match analysis in Derbyshire’s history, while the best innings analysis was 9-71 by Arthur Morton at Blackwell in 1911.

The most recent instance of a Derbyshire bowler taking seven wickets against Nottinghamshire an innings is David Steele, with 7-133 at Worksop in 1980.

In more recent times, Derbyshire’s highest individual score against Notts is Michael di Venuto’s 165 at Trent Bridge in 2001, while the best bowling analysis is Dominic Cork’s 6-78 in the 2nd innings at Trent Bridge in 2002, the last time Derbyshire defeated Nottinghamshire.

And in September 2007, Jonathan Clare had a memorable debut for Derbyshire when he took 5-90 at Chesterfield.
