Derbyshire’s Royal London One-Day Cup game against Notts Outlaws will be the 60th contest in List A matches since the two sides first met in the Players County League at Chesterfield in August 1969.

Heritage Officer, David Griffin, looks at the statistical background to the game.

Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire have met on 59 previous occasions in this form of the game, with Derbyshire victorious on 20 occasions with two abandonments, and Derby will host this fixture for the 21st time, the other home games having been staged at Chesterfield, Heanor and Ilkeston.

Surprisingly, and solely because of the vagaries of the structure of county cricket, the two sides never met at all in this format for six consecutive seasons between 2008 and 2013.

Derbyshire’s highest-ever score against Nottinghamshire was 275 in a losing cause at Welbeck Colliery in 2016, whilst Nottinghamshire’s 340-7 in the same game was their highest total in clashes between the two counties.

Derbyshire’s lowest total was 97 in the aforementioned first-ever game at Chesterfield, while Nottinghamshire mustered just 81 at Trent Bridge in 1972, when Mike Hendrick recorded the astonishing figures of 7.4-4-7-6.

Hendrick also took 5 wickets in an innings at Chesterfield in 1975, while Phil Russell was the only other Derbyshire player to achieve the feat, taking 5-54 in 1974 at Trent Bridge.

Derbyshire’s three centuries in this series of games all came away from home at Trent Bridge; Chris Adams making a blistering 121 in 1997 (one of 5 List A hundreds scored by Adams that season), 109 by Matt Cassar in 1999, and an undefeated 100 from Chris Bassano in 2004 as Derbyshire cruised to a nine-wicket win.

Curiously, in 1975, the two sides met on three occasions in List A cricket in three different competitions; the John Player League, the Benson and Hedges Cup, and the quarter final of the Gillette Cup – with Derbyshire winning all three.
