The clash between Derbyshire and Warwickshire will be their 55th scheduled meeting in limited overs matches since they first met at Edgbaston in 1969 in the Players County League.

Heritage Officer, David Griffin, looks at the statistical background to the game.

The game in 1969 never took place, however, as inclement weather forced an abandonment, which was also the case on the last occasion these two sides were scheduled to meet, again at Edgbaston, in 2016.

The playing record in the series stands at 18 wins for Derbyshire, 27 for Warwickshire, with 9 matches ending as ‘No Result’ or ‘Abandoned’.

Pictured above is the Derbyshire team celebrating after the nine-run victory at Edgbaston in 2006. There were half-centuries from Travis Birt and Graeme Welch, and five wickets for Steffan Jones – the only bowler to take five wickets in an innings in List A cricket against Warwickshire.

Where Derbyshire has been the home side, the two counties have met previously 17 times at Derby, and have also clashed at Chesterfield, Ilkeston, Buxton and Leek.

For the most memorable Derbyshire victory in matches between these two sides, we have to go back to 1978, and the semi-final of the Benson & Hedges Cup, at Derby.

In a game spread over two days because of inclement weather, Eddie Barlow’s inspired side scored 203 for 9 in their 55 overs, with Tony Borrington making 77, and Warwickshire’s England fast bowler, Bob Willis, taking 3-30.

Warwickshire’s reply was hindered by a truly amazing spell of bowling by Mike Hendrick, who, when he retired to third man at the end of his opening spell, had figures of 8-6-2-2. Ably supported by Geoff Miller, 3-18 in 11 overs – Warwickshire were 97-5 before Geoff Humpage rallied with 78. But Barlow came back at the end and took three wickets in eight balls to secure a victory for Derbyshire and a trip to Lord’s to play Kent in the final.

Twelve years later, in 1990, Derbyshire triumphed by just a single run at Derby, as the home side maintained their heady progress towards the RAL Sunday League title. This was the closest victory for Derbyshire in their series of matches against Warwickshire.

There have been three Derbyshire centurions against Warwickshire – Alan Hill, John Wright and John Morris.
