Derbyshire resume their Specsavers County Championship programme with their 146th first class game against Worcestershire at The 3aaa County Ground; starting Friday 19 May at 11am.

Heritage Officer, David Griffin, looks at the statistical background to the game.

Derbyshire have had slightly the better of results over the preceding 145 games, winning 47, with 43 defeats, 53 draws and two games abandoned.

Worcestershire have visited six Derbyshire grounds since their first encounter in 1899 at Derby – Chesterfield, Ilkeston, Burton-on-Trent (Ind Coope Ground), Glossop and Buxton are the others – and this game will be their 35th visit to Derby.

There have been some outstanding performances from Derbyshire’s batsmen, none more so than James Pipe’s remarkable match-winning 71-ball hundred at Chesterfield in 2008, only the second century by a Derbyshire wicket-keeper in games against Worcestershire. Harvey Hosein’s maiden hundred at New Road in the final game of the 2016 season being the other.

Billy Godleman made a double century in the corresponding fixture last season, while TS (Stan) Worthington is the only other Derbyshire batsman to register a double hundred, at Chesterfield in 1933.

In 1992, three batsmen scored hundreds in Derbyshire’s first innings against Worcestershire at Derby – Peter Bowler, Chris Adams and Steve Goldsmith.

As is often the case, we look to Cliff Gladwin and Les Jackson for the outstanding bowling feats. Derbyshire’s best-ever innings and match figures against Worcestershire are 9-41 and 16-84 respectively by Gladwin at Amblecote in 1952, while Jackson took hat tricks against them, in 1958 and 1960.

Finally, Ilkeston-born Walter Sugg is the only Derbyshire player to register a hundred before lunch against Worcestershire, at Derby, way back in August 1899.
