Wicketkeeper-batsman Gary Wilson will lead the Derbyshire Falcons in this summer’s NatWest T20 Blast.

The 31-year-old, who is the Club’s Vice-Captain, will captain the Falcons and work closely with Twenty20 Specialist Coach, John Wright.

The experienced Ireland international has a wealth of limited overs knowledge, and has previous experience leading a side when he captained Surrey in 2014.

While at Surrey, he twice reached Twenty20 Finals Day, first in 2013 when they finished runners-up and then again the following season when Wilson led the side to the semi-finals.

Wilson has made 145 Twenty20 appearances, scoring 2,483 runs and claiming 96 dismissals. He has also feature in 53 Twenty20 internationals.

Wright said: “Gary is very motivated, a good leader and I know he is looking forward to the challenge.

“International cricket grows your knowledge and with his experiences he is well set up to lead the team.

“He is one of those cricketers who will enjoy the leadership role and he has experience with a big club like Surrey, leading them to a finals day and that’s where we want to get to.”

Wilson added: “When John asked me it didn’t take long for me to accept. It’s an honour to captain the county and I’m looking forward to it.

“In Twenty20 cricket, everyone is beatable. We will try and get off to a good start but it is important we keep the processes the same and do the basics well.”
