Hamidullah Qadri took a maiden five-wicket haul as Derbyshire defeated Glamorgan by 39 runs to claim first Specsavers County Championship win since July 2015.

The 16-year-old spinner returned figures of 5-60 on debut, including the final wicket, to help dismiss the hosts for 172 at Cardiff as the county secured their first four-day win of the season.

It was the first championship victory since Derbyshire defeated Northamptonshire almost two years ago, as the county claimed 21 points from the match.

The Glamorgan batsmen approached the start of the day with caution in the face of some tight bowing from the Derbyshire spinners.

Only nine runs were added in 11.4 overs when the first wicket went down. Night-watchman Timm van der Gugten was caught by a superb running catch by Luis Reece off Qadri.

New batsman Owen Morgan hit seven off 35 balls before he was next to go, caught at slip off Jeevan Mendis. And when the dangerous Colin Ingram was caught at mid-on off Qadri for nine, Glamorgan were struggling on 42-4.

A 50-run partnership between Aneurin Donald and Nicholas Selman raised hopes for the hosts, but the introduction of Wayne Madsen brought the end of both men. First Donald was caught at short-leg by Hughes for 31, before Selman was stumped of a leg-side delivery for 43, with Glamorgan 99-6.

Andrew Salter and Chris Cooke tried to put together a partnership to pull their side back into the game, but after a stand of 20, Salter was lbw to Qadri for nine.

Qadri had his fourth soon after when Graham Wagg was caught behind for four and Derbyshire required just two more wickets to win, with the hosts still needing 77.

New batsman Merchant de Lange didn’t hang around hitting 20 off 15 balls, before he was run out by Billy Godleman.

And it was fitting that it was young Qadri who took the final wicket, Hogan caught by Mendis at mid-wicket, as he finished with five wickets and Derbyshire claimed victory.
