NatWest T20 Blast Captain Gary Wilson says he is confident about the Falcons’ chances heading into this summer’s competition, starting with an away trip to Northants Steelbacks.

Speaking to BBC Radio Derby, Wilson said he was not expecting to lead Derbyshire Falcons when he signed, but was pleased when Twenty20 Specialist Coach John Wright asked him to take on the role.

Derbyshire’s first game in the NatWest T20 Blast is against the reigning champions Northants Steelbacks on Friday 7 July, before they face Yorkshire Vikings at Queen’s Park, Chesterfield the following day.

Wilson said: “We know we have got two tough games to start with against Northants and Yorkshire. They are two sides who traditionally do well, but we are set up quite nicely and have got some good players and we are looking forward to getting started.

“It is handy to have experience but it isn’t everything, if you are good enough you are old enough and we have some exciting players that don’t necessarily have Twenty20 experience.

“We also have the experienced players too in myself, Imran Tahir, Matt Henry and Daryn Smit and there is a core of players that will be looking to lead from the front.”

John Wright joined the Club as Twenty20 Specialist Coach ahead of this summer’s competition and will offer Gary Wilson support throughout the competition.

Wilson added: “John Wright’s CV is unbelievable and it would be silly not to use him, all the players have huge respect for him for what he has done for the Club and as a coach.

“We want to go as far as we can and try and win the competition. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves though, but we will try and play our best cricket and the results will hopefully look after themselves.”
