Milnes and Slater inspire Seconds victory

Thursday 17th August 2017
Written by Danny Painter

Tom Milnes took 3-29 and Ben Slater hit 51 as Derbyshire beat Nottinghamshire by four wickets on the final day of their Second XI Championship match at Swarkestone CC.

Nottinghamshire resumed the final day on 102-7, with a lead of 44 and Derbyshire looking to wrap the innings up quickly. However, stubborn lower-order resistance from Lyndon James (40) and Matthew Carter (52) steered the visitors to 215 before Milnes wrapped up the innings, setting Derbyshire 158 to win.

The chase started well, Ben Slater reaching his half-century before he was lbw to Connor Marshall for 51 and Charlie Macdonell was out to Carter, Derbyshire 78-2 but handily placed.

It was at this point the Nottinghamshire bowlers began their comeback, Carter removing James Kettleborough (9) and Harvey Hosein (10) in the space of seven overs, before Marshall had Nils Priestley caught without scoring in the next over.

Derbyshire went into the tea interval on 99-5, with the game finely poised and batsmen still requiring a further 59 to win in the final session. Milnes (27 not out), supported by Akhil Patel (26) steadied the innings for Derbyshire, guiding them to victory with four wickets in hand.
