Daryn Smit will captain the Falcons in the NatWest T20 Blast this week in the absence of Gary Wilson, who is away with Ireland.
Wilson has joined up with the Ireland squad for an ICC International Cup fixture versus the Netherlands in Dublin, which begins on Tuesday.
Smit, who has experience leading South Africa franchise team Hollywoodbets Dolphins, will take on the role for the county’s final three North Group fixtures, starting with Tuesday evening’s big home game against Durham Jets.
He said: “It’s an absolute privilege being asked to lead the team and I’m looking forward to doing it in a big week as we head into the crunch stage of the competition.”
Derbyshire, who currently sit in fifth on 13 points with games in hand, will be aiming to claim their seventh in the competition as they target a top-four position and a quarter-final spot.
Smit added: “At this stage of the season preparation is important, but rest is just as important. The guys have had three or four days off and have been able to get away from it, not just physically but also mentally. We come back fresh and ready to go.
“It will be great to have Critch come back in, he’s offered great impetus for us at the top of the innings and offers that extra role as a leg spinner.
“Both Matt Henry and Imran Tahir bowled yesterday and seemed well rested. We’ll be looking to them to lead the attack alongside Hardus [Viljoen].
“The crowd has been great so far and it’s no coincidence that we’ve played some of our best cricket at home. We have two big games here this week so hopefully the crowd will create a great atmosphere for us.”
