West Indies, led by 105 from Kyle Hope and 92 to Kieran Powell, hit 340-3 on the first day of the historic Bell & Co Tour Match at The 3aaa County Ground.
The maiden day/night first-class fixture in Derby featured three first-class debutants in James Taylor, Callum Brodrick and Matt Sonczak, as the West Indies dominated the first day with runs across the top order.
Jason Holder won the toss for the visitors and elected to bat first, but Tom Milnes (1-69) got an early breakthrough in the fourth over of the day, dismissing Kraigg Braithwaite lbw for three.
Despite the early loss, Kyle Hope and Powell rebuilt nicely with defiant batting carrying the West Indies to 138-1 at the interval. The pair shared a 153-run partnership before Tony Palladino (1-37) had Powell lbw for a well-made 92.
The Hope brothers put on 72 before Sonczak bowled Kyle Hope for 105, the batsman’s first century of the tour. Shai Hope (69 not out) went on to hit a half-century before he was joined in the feat by Roston Chase (unbeaten on 62), his third fifty in as many innings.
The tourists will resume on the second day on 340-3.
