Kim Barnett has extended his contract with Derbyshire to continue to provide support to the Club as Cricket Advisor for the 2018 season.

Since returning to Derbyshire at the end of 2016, Barnett has overseen the implementation of the county’s new coaching model and the recruitment of a number of senior players.

He also led the appointment of the Club’s first ever Specialist Twenty20 Coach, John Wright, for the 2017 NatWest T20 Blast, in which Derbyshire enjoyed a record campaign and reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2005.

Barnett in his role as Cricket Advisor will continue to provide guidance and support to Captain Billy Godleman and the cricket management team.

Chairman, Ian Morgan OBE said: “Kim has done a tremendous job in overseeing the implementation of the Club’s new coaching model.

“He was influential in the recruitment of a number of senior players and coaches, including Specialist Twenty20 Coach John Wright, and he has provided valuable support to the senior cricket management team, led by Captain Billy Godleman.

“We’re delighted he has agreed to remain at the Club for next season and continue to provide guidance as we continue to strive for on-field success.

“While we have witnessed notable improvements in 2017, we recognise that this is only the start and there is still a lot of work ahead. It’s great that Kim will be with us to help us on our way.”

Barnett added: “I still see my role as primarily off the field, providing direction and strategy to help Billy, Gary and the players be successful on the field.

“We have a great leader and very strong character in Billy. He leads from the front and has the respect of the players. I will continue to provide support as work continues to bring success to the county.

“We are building a balanced squad which contains the talent and experience needed to be successful across all forms and I’m excited by what the future may bring.

“We will continue to ensure the right people and resources are in place to allow the players to prepare efficiently and go out and perform.”
