Gary Wilson says he was delighted to end the 2017 with victory at Gloucestershire this week, and he is already looking forward to 2018.
Derbyshire recorded their third Specsavers County Championship victory of the season with a 157-run win at Bristol on Thursday.
Alex Hughes (142) and Wayne Madsen (121) both hit centuries in the match, before Imran Tahir took 5-76 on the final day to claim victory and end the campaign in style.
Wilson said: “It’s great to finish with another win, it really is. In fact we were unlucky at Notts, so we might have finished the season with four compared with no wins last season.
“It’s hard for me to talk about last season because I wasn’t at the club. However, I can say that I am looking forward to next season.
“I think there is a lot to work with here and hopefully with a couple of signings and we can build on this season. I’d love to go one step further next year in all competitions.
“All in all, I have been pretty pleased with how the season has gone. I think to get the captaincy in the NatWest T20 Blast and get the side to the quarter-finals was something I am very proud of and I think I have settled in nicely. But next year, we won’t do even better.”
Wilson was full of praise for his bowlers after they dismissed Gloucestershire on the final day at Bristol to ensure Derbyshire ended the season on a high.
He added: “Harry Podmore was excellent upfront, he probably bowled better than his two wickets deserved. Then Hardus [Viljoen] was running in quick on what was quite an unresponsive pitch for the quick bowlers.
“I thought everyone that had the ball in their hand did a good job, but credit to Imran [Tahir] for picking up the five-fer. It’s great to have him on our side, the crowd who have paid to come in have seen a good game of cricket.
“It’s easy to see why he has played for so many good sides around the world.”
