DerbyshireTV spoke to Wayne Madsen as the squad returned to training with a series of fitness tests at The 3aaa County Ground.

Two days into training for the 2018 campaign, the squad are being assessed through a series of fitness tests before specialised programmes are set out to target each player’s aims for the winter.

The top-order batsman, who hit 1,441 runs in 2017 including 526 in game’s shortest form at an average of 48, said the hard work starts now and the players are motivated to be in peak condition come the start of the season.

He said: “It’s great to be back and to see everyone again after a break at the end of the season.

“We’re back in with fitness work and gauging where we are right now and planning for where we want to go.

“As a squad we have made great progress so I’m exciting for 2018, so I’m really looking forward to putting in the hard yards in the winter to be ready for April.

“It feels a way off when you first come back, but that motivation for a cricketer when you come back is to get yourself ready for April and make sure your body is in peak condition. So that is what we’ll be aiming to achieve over the next five months.”
