Powerful hitter and tricky left-arm bowler, Luis Reece has the spotlight on team goals this summer, aiming to build on improved performances in 2017.
After a successful first summer with Derbyshire, during which he hit 1,180 runs across all forms, the all-rounder says the squad is working hard on areas to improve and will all be ready to put their hands up and contribute on field come April.
Reece said: “I never really set any goals, I just aim to perform as well as I can in every game. You come to understand that in some games you have up and down moments, but it’s important to stay level whether you’ve done well or not.
“It’s about winning games of cricket for Derbyshire. I’m focused more on team goals, and as a group if we look after that then individual goals look after themselves.
“I’ve always been the sort of person who wants to look at themselves in the mirror and know I’ve tried as hard as I can and left everything out on the ground.
“Everyone wants to win competitions and trophies and win games of cricket for the county and throughout the season you get plenty of opportunities to do that and when you do it’s a massive reward.
“The players will be chomping at the bit to go out there in the first game and everyone will be trying to put their hands up and try and win that first game for Derbyshire.”
With just over ten weeks to go until the season opener against Middlesex at The 3aaa County Ground, Reece is aiming for progression at home, believing new recruits and emerging talent can improve Derbyshire performances.
He said: “It’s been two years without a home win so we are trying to make sure we can produce some results for our home supporters and try and entertain the crowd.
“We’ve recruited a few new faces, so hopefully alongside the talent we already have within the squad, we can create pitches which suit them and help us to be more competitive in games.”
The squad continues to build more skills-based work into training whilst working on fitness and recovery, and the 27-year-old is enjoying pushing himself, hoping to see the benefits out in the middle.
Reece added: “The next couple of months are all geared towards getting outside and playing in the middle so the lads are working incredibly hard to make sure they tick all the boxes and are as well prepared as they can be.
“There are always things which you can work on and that’s part of winter – you may want to get better at a skill you are already good at, or improve weaknesses.
“I’ve come back and worked incredibly hard in certain areas, so hopefully that will transfer onto the field and increase the results I’ve been getting.”
