Gary Wilson hit an unbeaten 64 as Derbyshire battled for bonus points in the rain-affected draw with Leicestershire at The Fischer County Ground.

It was Derbyshire’s morning as they claimed five wickets for just 114 runs to claim maximum bowing points and restrict Leicestershire to 381 all out.

The hosts responded well after lunch and took four quick wickets before first Alex Hughes (42), Wilson and Hardus Viljoen (43) rallied for Derbyshire to help their side close on 251-8 declared as the game ended in a draw.

Derbyshire claimed 10 points from the match to move up to second in Division Two after two fixtures, a point behind next week’s opponents Warwickshire.

With the first seven sessions of the match lost to the weather, the final two days became about securing bonus points and both sides will be pleased with their return from five sessions of highly-competitive cricket.

Duanne Olivier claimed the first wicket of the morning on Day Four as he bowled Neil Dexter for 47, shortly after Leicestershire notched their third batting bonus point.

Ned Eckersley (54) was out to Ravi Rampaul soon after, but all-rounder Ben Raine (47) got Leicestershire over the line to a fourth bonus point before a mix up in the middle left him at the same end as Dieter Klein when Will Davis removed the bails.

Viljoen returned to the attack and wrapped up the Leicestershire innings, the hosts 19 runs short of the final bonus point as Derbyshire claimed all three bowling bonus points.

After a good morning for Derbyshire, quick wickets fell after lunch as Luis Reece and Wayne Madsen were both lbw without scoring and Ben Slater was caught for 27 shortly after passing 3,000 career first-class runs.

Godleman soon followed and Derbyshire’s hopes of achieving a bonus batting point were fading until Hughes and Wilson rebuilt nicely and added 50 for the fifth wicket, with Hughes hitting his 2,000th career first-class run in the process.

Dexter broke the stand but Wilson continued resolutely and Matt Critchley picked up the mantle to attack, and he hit 38 off 57 as Derbyshire closed in on a bonus batting point.

It was Viljoen who powered Derbyshire well over the 200 mark to collect a further bonus point as the strong South African blasted 43 from 33 balls, including eight fours and one six.

Wilson remained the constant and hit out when necessary to push Derbyshire passed 250 to earn another point and onto 251-8d at which point they declared to bring an end to the match.

Derbyshire take 10 points and Leicestershire take 11.
