Three Derbyshire batsmen hit half-centuries as the hosts closed Day One on 301-4 against Durham at The 3aaa County Ground.
Ben Slater (55) and Luis Reece (48) put on an opening stand of 107 before Durham took three quick wickets to get themselves back into the game in the afternoon session.
But Wayne Madsen (80 not out), Billy Godleman (61) and Matt Critchley (unbeaten on 35) regained Derbyshire’s advantage and went into the close having claimed three bonus batting points.
