Harvey Hosein hit 62 as Derbyshire made 219 on Day One of the Second XI Championship fixture away to Northamptonshire.

Charlie Hartley then took the early wicket of Ben Curran to reduce Northamptonshire to 8-1 after 4.5 overs.

After Northamptonshire won the toss and elected to bowl first, James Kettleborough (7) and Callum Brodrick (7) were out to Ben Cotton as Derbyshire slipped to 26-2 after seven overs.

Hosein began the fight back for the visitors and he hit 62 from 84 balls, including seven fours as he put on a vital 45-run partnership with Tom Wood to rebuild the visitors’ innings.

Wood (16), Anuj Dal (18) and Hamidullah Qadri (10) all made short cameos before being dismissed, as Gareth Wade struck twice for the home side.

Scott Palumbo steadied the ship for Derbyshire as he and Alfie Gleadall came together in the middle to make a much-needed 56-run partnership in 24.4 overs.

Palumbo went on to make a valuable 54 from 130 balls, whilst Gleadall also made 23 before he was lbw to Saif Zaib.

Conner Haddow then took the final wickets of Will Davis (1) and Hartley (0) to add to the earlier wicket of Palumbo as Derbyshire finished with a total of 219 all out.

Hartley struck early in the Northamptonshire reply as the hosts closed on 8-1, trailing Derbyshire by 211 runs.
