Written by Danny Painter

Derbyshire have named a 14-man squad ahead of the Royal London One-Day Cup local derby against Yorkshire Vikings at The 3aaa County Ground; on Wednesday 30 May, 11am start.

The second-placed Falcons face third-placed Vikings with both sides looking to mount a strong challenge for qualification to the latter stages of the competition.

Billy Godleman continues to lead from the front following his impressive 64 in the five-run win over Leicestershire. The Captain is Derbyshire’s leading run-scorer in the competition with 284 runs in four matches, averaging 71 and with a top-score of 137.

Wayne Madsen and Daryn Smit will be looking to rekindle some of their form from last year’s fixture against Yorkshire, as both hit big scores against the Vikings.

Madsen struck 112 from 104 balls and took three catches as well as a run-out, whilst Smit hit an unbeaten 77 from 68 deliveries.

Luis Reece is now the Falcons’ leading wicket taker with eight, at an average of 18, following another three wicket haul against Leicestershire, his best figures of 3-37 in seven overs.

Opposition

Yorkshire Vikings arrive at The 3aaa County Ground on Wednesday looking to build on Sunday’s comfortable win over Leicestershire in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

The Vikings secured a nine-wicket victory with 21 balls to spare against the Foxes as they climbed to third in the North Group table.

The result was inspired by a strong performance from Adam Lyth as he struck an unbeaten 132 from 127 balls including 17 boundaries to lead from the front.

Top-order batsman Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Cheteshwar Pujara also continued their good form as they struck 74 and 75 respectively; Kohler-Cadmore is now the leading run scorer in the competition whilst former Falcon Pujara passed 50 for the fourth time in four innings.

Yorkshire boast a strong bowling attack, headlined by England stars Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid. Plunkett returns from the Indian Premier League, whilst Rashid leads the Vikings for wickets with eight in four matches.

Pre-Match Talk

Matt Critchley praised Derbyshire’s bowling under pressure and hopes the Club can continue their momentum into the game versus Yorkshire.

The 21-year-old all-rounder is pleased with Derbyshire’s one-day campaign so far following their third win in four matches which saw the Falcons climb to second in the North Group table.

“We’ve had three wins and a loss, but I think we’ll probably look back at things that we could have done better to win the other games but it’s still a good position to be in.

“Yorkshire are a top side but I think last year we had a bit of an edge over them in the Twenty20.

“It’ll be good to play against them to try and get another win on the board and put ourselves in a better position going in to the back end of the competition.”

Critchley also praised Derbyshire’s bowlers’ ability to thrive in pressure situations and close out tight games.

He said: “As a bowler, you can’t shy away from your responsibilities. You know what you’re job is and what you have to do and I think the boys are thriving on that pressure.

“Especially [Luis] Reece, I think the way he has bowled recently has been fantastic. Obviously, he has got the skills but he’s had more responsibility and pressure with the ball, he’s got some key wickets at key times.”
