Seconds beat strong Lancashire side

Derbyshire put in good performances with both bat and ball to claim a seven-wicket win over Lancashire in the Second XI One-Day Trophy at Northern CC.

Early wickets to remove Haseeb Hameed (15) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (11) and further wickets at regular intervals kept the pressure on Lancashire and enabled Derbyshire to restrict them to 172-9 in their 50 overs.

Building on a successful bowling performance, the Derbyshire top order paced their chase well and hauled in Lancashire’s total with more than two overs to spare.

After losing the toss and fielding first, Mohammad Azarullah struck in the second over to remove Rob Jones without scoring.

He got the vital wicket of Hameed in the tenth to reduce Lancashire to 25-2, before Chanderpaul was caught off Alfie Gleadall as Derbyshire took control of the One-Day Trophy match.

Four batsmen made the twenties, but none scored more than 26 as Derbyshire kept it tight and introduced spinner Hamidullah Qadri.

He took two wickets in the middle-order, before opening bowlers Azarullah and Gleadall returned to close out a good 50 overs for Derbyshire which left the hosts on 172-9.

Opening the Derbyshire innings, James Kettleborough and Harvey Hosein put on an opening stand of 112 in 28 overs to take the game away from Lancashire.

Kettleborough was eventually out to Jack Morley for a well-made 51, but Hosein continued and despite the wicket of Tom Wood (3), Derbyshire remained on course for victory.

Anuj Dal was run out for 14, but Scott Palumbo joined the ever-present Hosein to take Derbyshire to victory in the 48th over with the wicketkeeper-batsman unbeaten on 71.

Derbyshire are next in Second XI action on Tuesday 29 May, when they begin a three-day Second XI Championship match with Northamptonshire.
