Derbyshire lost to Warwickshire by 61 runs in a high-scoring Second XI Trophy fixture at Hem Heath.

Batting first, Liam Banks struck 115 for Warwickshire as they posted 297-8 from their 50 overs, with Dan Wheeldon (3-38) and Will Davis (3-82) both claiming three wickets.

Tom Wood hit 56 and there were lower-order runs, but Derbyshire lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually all out for 236, falling 62 runs short of their chase.

Banks added 129 runs for the third wicket with Adam Hose (68) as the visitors moved onto 232-3 in the 39th over, well-placed for a late push towards 300.

Derbyshire fought back and claimed five wickets for 65 runs to keep Warwickshire under 300, but 25 not out from Alex Mellor guided them to a competitive score of 297-8.

Derbyshire’s chase stuttered early as they lost the first three wickets with the score on 11. In at four, Wood steadied the innings alongside Callum Brodrick (28) and Scott Palumbo (16).

Leg spinner Josh Poysden had Wood lbw and Alex Thomson soon removed Hamidullah Qadri (6) and Alfie Gleadall (2) to reduce Derbyshire to 124-7 and give Warwickshire control.

Wheeldon crashed 36 off 24 balls with five sixes in an eighth-wicket partnership with Davis, who hit an unbeaten 37 off 31 balls.

Wheeldon became Poysden’s third wicket and James Sykes hit 24, but the chase came to an end on 236 when Oliver Hannon-Dalby claimed his third and Derbyshire were all out, falling 62 runs short of their target.
