Billy Godleman made 75 from 98 balls, but Derbyshire lost their final home game by 25 runs to Lancashire Lightning in the Royal London One-Day Cup at The 3aaa County Ground.

Hardus Viljoen also made 50 from 34 balls and took two wickets but Derbyshire slipped to defeat against a Liam Livingstone inspired Lancashire side. Livingstone hit a quick-fire 86 from 73 balls and also took 1-31 in 10 overs whilst Jordan Clark also hit 51 from 40 balls.

The result means Derbyshire now must win the final game of the group stages against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bowl first and opening bowlers Duanne Olivier and Ravi Rampaul started well to restrict Lancashire to 42-0 after 10 overs.

On his return to the side, Hardus Viljoen claimed the vital breakthrough as he took the wicket of Haseeb Hameed for 26 in the 12th over. Livingstone was next to the crease, as he kick-started the visitors’ innings, hitting four boundaries to rush onto 36 from 28 balls.

Livingstone also came together with opening batsman Alex Davies to combine for a partnership of 60 before Alex Hughes removed the latter for 39 in the 22nd over.

Lancashire continued to press on as Dane Vilas joined Livingstone in the middle. The pair both struck boundaries to accelerate the visitors onto 171-2 from 30 overs with another half-century partnership.

Derbyshire responded well to Lancashire’s and Livingstone’s charge, as the Falcons started to take wickets at regular intervals. Rampaul came back into the attack with purpose, taking a wicket after just three balls to dismiss Vilas for 32 from 27 deliveries.

Viljoen claimed his second of the match to remove Livingstone for 86 from 73 balls, before Madsen also removed Rob Jones for 17 to reduce the visitors to 221-5 in the 40th over.

Lancashire continued to keep the scoreboard ticking and to add another fifty partnership between Jordan Clark (51) and Josh Bohannon (25) before Olivier and Rampaul each claimed a wicket. Olivier then took the final wicket of Tom Mennie (1) to take his second wicket as the visitors set Derbyshire 291 to win.

Ben Slater and Billy Godleman started typically quickly to accelerate the Falcons to 48-0 after seven overs as the pair hit eight boundaries between them.

Captain Godleman continued his fine form to reach his fifty from 48 deliveries that included seven boundaries as he recorded back-to-back half centuries in the competition.

Lancashire used spin bowlers to effect as Matthew Parkinson dismissed Slater for 46 after the openers had brought up the 100 partnership in the 19th over.

The visitors continued to take wickets in quick succession as Madsen (5) and Hughes (7) fell in the space of three overs. Derbyshire lost wickets at regular intervals as Parry removed Matt Critchley and Godleman after the captain had struck an impressive 75 as the Falcons slipped to 157-5 in the 35th over.

Lancashire continued to make scoring difficult for Derbyshire, as Gary Wilson (14), Daryn Smit (7) and Callum Brodrick (11) made short cameos before losing their wickets.

There was a late resistance from Viljoen and Olivier as the pair made a 69 partnership that saw the former make a fifty from just 34 balls but ultimately Derbyshire fell short of the target.
