Charlie Hartley claimed figures of 5-91 as Derbyshire bowled out Kent for 305 on Day One of a four-day Second XI Friendly at Denby CC.

After Kent won the toss and decided to bat first, Hartley got Derbyshire off to a strong start as he removed opener Karim (6) in the third over of the day. The fast bowler continued his fine form as he removed four of the visitors’ top five batsmen as Kent slipped to 88-5 at lunch.

The visitors rebuilt the innings after the interval as Kent batsman Khan combined with Jordan Cox (38) and Adam Riley for half-century partnerships.

Leg spinner Matt McKiernan eventually removed Khan for 61, before Riley (36) also fell as Tom Brett took his second wicket of the match to reduce Kent to 218-8.

There was a late rally as the visitors added 87 runs for the final two wickets to accelerate past 300, while Hartley claimed his fifth of the match to finish with figures of 5-91 from his 26 overs.

Derbyshire opening batsmen James Kettleborough and Chesney Hughes negotiated the remaining overs of the day to finish 19-0, trailing by 286 runs.
