The captain batted in partnerships worth 130 with Wayne Madsen (72) and 85 with Alex Hughes (60 not out) as Derbyshire began to reel in Sussex’s first innings total of 440.
Earlier in the day, Lockie Ferguson (4-106) and Hardus Viljoen (3-97) made light work of the final three Sussex batsman in what was a good day for Derbyshire.
