Billy Godleman hit 116 but it wasn’t enough as Derbyshire lost by six wickets against Notts Outlaws in the Royal London One-Day Cup at The Pattonair County Ground.
Godleman recorded his first century of the campaign, whilst Luis Reece also notched 88 as Derbyshire set the visitors 298 runs to win.
Alfie Gleadall took 3-43 in Notts’ reply but half-centuries from Ben Slater, Steven Mullaney and Tom Moores guided the Outlaws to victory as the hosts’ unbeaten start to the season came to an end.
Reece’s intentions were clear with a boundary from the first ball after Derbyshire won the toss and chose to bat first.
Reece and Godleman frustrated the Outlaws’ bowling attack as the pair brought up their half-centuries either side of the century partnership.
Reece (88) was eventually dismissed when he was caught by Luke Fletcher off the bowling of Steven Mullaney as the pair’s 153-run partnership came to an end.
Godleman continued his fine form after setting a platform for the hosts alongside Reece, as Wayne Madsen hit five boundaries in a quick-fire 38 to accelerate the score to 224-1.
Madsen then fell as he was caught by Ben Duckett off the bowling of Jake Ball, before Godleman passed his first century of the campaign off 131 balls.
Godleman’s century was the first from a Derbyshire player at home against Nottinghamshire in white-ball cricket, and his fourth List A century for the club.
Derbyshire then lost two wickets in quick succession as Critchley (8) was bowled by Ball and du Plooy (12) was bowled by Fletcher with Derbyshire 258-4.
Godleman then followed shortly after he was caught by wicket-keeper Tom Moores for Fletcher’s second wicket.
Fletcher halted Derbyshire’s late charge for wickets with three wickets in the final over, including two in the final two balls ending with figures for 5-56 as Derbyshire ended 297-8.
Notts got off to a strong start in reply as Joe Clarke and Slater put on a 74-run partnership.
Gleadall came into the attack to get a much-needed breakthrough for Derbyshire with his second delivery, dismissing Clarke for 37.
Reece then trapped Ben Duckett lbw for 4 shortly after to reduce the Outlaws to 79-2, but Jake Libby came to the crease to steady the innings.
Libby combined with Slater to add 92 runs for the second wicket, as the latter passed his half-century to take the score to 172-2.
Gleadall then dismissed Slater (83) and Libby (41) within three balls as Derbyshire looked to build momentum after Notts’ strong start.
However, Moores (52) and Mullaney (68) put on 126 runs for the fifth wicket to stop Derbyshire’s momentum and secure victory for the visitors.
