Sam Conners took three wickets as 21 wickets fell on Day One of Derbyshire’s Second XI three-day friendly against Essex at Billericay CC.

There were also three wickets for Connor Marshall and Dustin Melton as Derbyshire bowled Essex out for 173, after the visitors had struggled to 55 all out in the first innings.

Jack Plom took 5-12 for the hosts, while Derbyshire finished the day 41-1 with Tom Wood (3 not out) and Dinnie (16 not out) unbeaten overnight.

Derbyshire struggled to put any partnerships together throughout their first innings, as they slipped to 19-4, before Wood (22) and Dinnie provide a brief respite.

The pair added 23 for the fifth wicket, before both fell in quick succession as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

Dinnie (14 not out) ran out of partners as Plom claimed his five-wicket haul to bowl out Derbyshire for 55.

In response, Conners got Derbyshire off to the perfect start to bowl Adeel Shafique (5) as the visitors took five quick wickets to reduce Essex to 50-5.

Josh Rymell (58) then hit a half-century in important partnerships with Aron Nijjar (18) and Shane Snater (25) to take the hosts past 150.

However, Marshall and Conners returned to take three wickets apiece as Essex were all out or 173, with a first-innings lead of 113 runs.

Tyler McGladdery (22) fell before the end of the day as Derbyshire closed on 41-1.
