Mark Watt claimed 5-29 as 21 wickets fell on Day Two of the Second XI Championship game against Worcestershire at Halesowen.

An unbeaten 34 from James Taylor helped Derbyshire to 111 all out in the first innings, before Watt’s five-wicket haul, and 3-30 from Anuj Dal dismissed the hosts for 153.

The visitors closed the day 31-1, with Ifran Karim not out on 17, and Hamidullah Qadri yet to score, trailing by 11 runs heading into the final day’s play.

With no play possible on Day One due to overnight rain, Derbyshire took to the crease on the second morning with Karim and Jack Redman opening the batting.

Redman was the first wicket to fall, trapped lbw by Dillon Pennington without scoring, before the bowler took the second of his five wickets by dismissing Tom Wood the same way for nought.

Karim scored one run before Pennington claimed his third wicket, having the opener caught by Josh Reed with Derbyshire 1-3 after four overs of the day.

Anoop Chima (15) and Dal (7) put on 18 for the fourth wicket, with Nils Priestley (16) and Daryn Smit (4) combining to make 21 for the sixth, although Derbyshire were still 49-9 when Taylor arrived at the crease.

The half-century stand between him and Connor Marshall (26) moved Derbyshire into three figures, with the partnership at 62 when the latter was dismissed by Pennington (5-16).

Having made his mark with the bat, Taylor could not have asked for a better start with the ball when he bowled Tom Fell with the first delivery of the innings.

Dustin Melton dismissed Joshua Dell for one, while Dal claimed the wickets of Olly Westbury (27), Alex Milton (5) and Nicholas Hammond (1).

Watt trapped Jack Haynes (39) lbw, before taking the final four wickets of the innings. Breed top-scored for the hosts with an unbeaten 47 as Worcestershire posted 153, a lead of 42.

Derbyshire only lost one wicket before the close of play, with Redman (8) caught by Dell off Davis. They will resume on Day Three on 31-1 with Karim and Qadri at the crease.
