Fynn Hudson-Prentice took a wicket with his maiden first-class delivery for Derbyshire on Day Three of the Specsavers County Championship game against Middlesex.
The all-rounder ended the day with 1-30 from his 13 overs, with Logan van Beek and Ravi Rampaul also claiming wickets, while Dawid Malan ended the day unbeaten on 177.
The visitors will resume tomorrow on 436-6, with Simpson not out on 91, trailing Derbyshire’s first innings total by 121 runs.
Middlesex began the third morning on 135-3, with Malan and Steven Finn at the crease after Luis Reece and Tony Palladino had shared three wickets on Day Two.
Logan van Beek took the first wicket of the day when he bowled Finn for a score of 18, after putting on 27 runs for the fourth wicket with Malan.
The Middlesex captain continued and reached his half-century in 106 balls, including seven fours as he and Max Holden (10) combined for 45 runs, moving their first innings score beyond 200.
Shortly before lunch, Hudson-Prentice came into the attack and made an immediate impact, finding Holden’s outside edge and having him caught behind by Hosein with his maiden first-class delivery for Derbyshire.
George Scott arrived at the crease and scored 23 runs before Matt Critchley caught him off Rampaul, bringing a 45-run partnership to an end, with Middlesex 250-6.
Malan took 200 balls to reach his century, before bringing it up with the 15th four of his innings, replicating the scores made by Billy Godleman and Leus du Plooy in the opening couple of days.
John Simpson joined Malan at the crease and the pair guided Middlesex to 319-6 at tea, still trailing by 238 runs and 89 runs still needed to avoid the follow-on.
Simpson achieved his half-century in 138 balls, including four fours, shortly before Malan brought up his 150, which came in 302 balls, 17 of which resulted in fours.
Middlesex closed Day Three still 121 runs behind Derbyshire’s first innings total of 557, on 436-6 with Malan (177*) and Simpson (91*) set to return to the crease on the final morning.
