Falcons fall short against Durham

Friday 9th August 2019
Written by Stephen Martin

Billy Godleman’s 39 was not enough as Durham beat Derbyshire by seven runs in a rain-affected game at The Pattonair County Ground.

D’Arcy Short (68) and Scott Steel (47) put together a century opening stand for the visitors, who posted a total of 160-5 from their 20 overs.

Godleman, Wayne Madsen (30) and Fynn Hudson-Prentice (31 not out) all made it into the 30s, but the Falcons could not chase down the required total in their seventh Vitality Blast match.

The opening pair of Short and Steel put on a total of 114 for the first wicket, with Short reaching his half-century in 37 balls, including nine fours.

The partnership was brought to an end in the 14th over, when Matt Critchley had the Australia batsman caught by Daryn Smit after he had lofted a ball from the spinner high into the air.

Steel himself made it to 47 before he too was dismissed by Critchley, being caught in the deep by Logan van Beek as Durham lost four wickets in as many overs.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice picked up his first wicket of the match in the final over, having Jack Burnham (4) caught by Wayne Madsen, as the visitors set Derbyshire a total of 161 to win.

Just eight balls into the Derbyshire innings, the rain arrived and forced the players to leave the field, although play resumed within a matter of minutes.

Godleman got the Derbyshire innings off to a positive start, hitting Matthew Potts for two fours and two sixes in just the second over. The Falcons captain went on to make a 20-ball 39 before being bowled by Nathan Rimmington.

The turning point in the innings came when Liam Trevaskis claimed wickets of Leus du Plooy (15) and Madsen (30) in the space of three balls, as the momentum shifted in Durham’s favour.

The bowler was soon at it again, as Alex Hughes was stumped by Stuart Poynter to give the bowler his third wicket of the innings, before the innings was delayed by rain for a second time.

After the players returned to the field, Derbyshire needed 29 runs from 13 balls. Hudson-Prentice made it to 31 not out, but the Falcons fell eight runs short of the required total.
