Billy Godleman said that Derbyshire’s strong start with both bat and ball was key to their win over Leicestershire, and the captain wants the Falcons to aim for similar against Lancashire.

Godleman struck an unbeaten 52 as Derbyshire secured their second nine-wicket victory in three days at The Fischer County Ground to strengthen their chances of a quarter-final place.

Despite a blistering 45 from Leicestershire’s Mark Cosgrove, the Falcons restricted the hosts to 124, which Godleman, Luis Reece and Wayne Madsen chased down with nine balls to spare.

Godleman believes a positive start to both innings was key to the victory, something that he wants the team to replicate against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford this afternoon.

“We didn’t see any pressure, we treated it as another game of cricket. We knew the significance of the game, in terms of needing to win, but we just wanted to start the game well, which we did,” said Godleman.

“We will recover before the game and assess the conditions at Old Trafford and pick the team that we think is best to win the game.

“We will be aiming to start well and put ourselves in a position to win another game.”
