A promising left-arm fast bowler who boasts great pace, Michael Cohen has joined Derbyshire until the end of the 2021 season.
The 21-year-old has played in 15 first-class matches for Western Province and has taken 50 wickets at an average of 26.12.
Having garnered praise for his pace and variation, the South African quick has claimed two five-wicket hauls since making his first-class debut in 2017, with best figures of 5-40.
Cohen starred for Western Province throughout the 2017-18 CSA Provincial Three-Day Challenge, where he was the club’s leading wicket-taker with 26 dismissals in six matches, at an average of 19.15.
He took ten wickets across five matches in the 2018-19 edition of the competition, with best figures of 4-29 against North West in February.
Leus du Plooy will be a familiar face to the seamer in the Derbyshire dressing room, after the pair featured for a Cricket South Africa Invitation XI against Bangladesh in 2017, in which Cohen claimed 4-23.
While the majority of his cricket has been played in the red-ball format, Cohen does have experience in the shorter forms of the game.
He has featured in four List A matches, in which he has claimed three wickets, while his four Twenty20 wickets have come in as many matches, at an average of 24.50.
Cohen, who qualifies as a local player through EU Citizenship, now arrives at Derbyshire ready to test himself in English conditions, bringing youth and raw left-arm pace to the Derbyshire pace attack.
