Billy Godleman is looking forward to beginning the 2020 campaign in front of Members at The Pattonair County Ground.

Derbyshire will start the County Championship season by hosting Leicestershire, starting on Sunday 19 April, before playing a further five first-class matches before the start of the Vitality Blast on Friday 29 May, with the hosts aiming to start strongly in their 150th year.

Godleman, who scored more than 1,000 first-class runs in 2019, is pleased to be starting the campaign in Derby and is encouraged by the block of County Championship cricket early on.

“We are very happy, it looks like an exciting start to the season,” Godleman said.

“It will be a special year, and to start your campaign at home means you can get a few extra seats filled, so we are really looking forward to that.

“I think the feedback from a lot of people within the game was that it’s preferable to have as much cricket blocked-off a possible, particularly the four-day matches because the transition from red ball cricket to white ball can take some players a bit of time to get used to.

“As always, there will be some times busier than others, but we are very much used to that playing county cricket.”

Godleman captained the side to a first-ever Vitality Blast Finals Day appearance in 2019, as the Falcons reached the final four teams in the competition before bowing out to eventual winners Essex Eagles.

The Derbyshire captain wants the team to build on the foundations laid by last season’s showing and take the lessons they have learnt into the new campaign.

“We had a taste of Finals Day last year, it was an enjoyable experience other than losing the semi-final,” Godleman added.

“We played some really good cricket throughout the competition and we learnt a lot last year, so we are looking forward to putting that into practice next year and starting the Vitality Blast campaign well.”
